At What Age Should You Learn to Play a Musical Instrument?

Updated: May 21

If you are a parent, or simply an individual who is interested in learning an instrument, you might be wondering what age is best for starting music lessons - namely, are you/your child too old now?

Here at Modern Music Learning, we specialise in high-quality music lessons for all, and in this blog, we will explore the prime age for learning an instrument.

What Is The Best Age To Start Music Lessons?

The period between birth to 9 years of age is considered as a ‘window of opportunity’ when it comes to developing a musical sensibility. This period is significant as part of a child’s development, which is why many regard this as the best time to learn a musical instrument.

During this time, children learn through their senses, and while learning an instrument formally (through lessons) doesn’t have to start until later on, exposing the child to music is important. This means that from birth, children should be exposed to music in various ways, from playing with musical toys to listening to music.

Music lessons should ideally begin once a child begins to understand music basics and a passion for music has been ignited. Most parents will see this in children aged 6 to 9 years - some children may even ask for music lessons themselves!

Remember, this is just a general guideline of the ideal ages to learn an instrument - some children grow a passion for music early on, while others may become interested past the age of 10.

How To Start Learning An Instrument

While early experience and exposure to music can certainly help, you can still learn an instrument later in life. No matter if you or your child is interested in learning an instrument, the best way to approach this is to invest in music lessons…
